Inspired by the repetitive still life paintings of Severin Roesen and Frida Kahlo’s quote: “I paint flowers so they will not die,” this piece examines grief, devotion, remembrance, and stillness. Bookended by two significant deaths in my life (my beloved cat, Corduroy, passing away in 2019 and my Grandmother’s unexpected death in 2021) this work expresses the ever-changing grief I felt while trying to keep up a steady studio practice.

Made mostly while in residency at NZ Pacific Studio and Earthskin Creative Residency.

This series of small embroideries explores personal issues of anxiety, self-deprecation, pity, and shame. Each piece consists of microscopic aspects of the human body with semi-obscured text relating to the organ’s function, as well as issues of mental health.
